As the premier provider of comprehensive health services in the West Georgia and East Alabama regions, WellStar West Georgia Medical Center has been honored for its achievements in many areas of patient care.
For the past three out of four years (2019, 2017 and 2016), WellStar West Georgia Medical Center has been named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by IBM Watson Health (formerly Truven Health Analytics), a leading provider of data-driven analytics and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.
The Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® study identifies hospitals and leadership teams that provide the highest level of value to their communities, based on a national balanced scorecard measuring overall organizational performance across 11 key analytic measures including patient care, operational efficiency, and financial stability. To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers evaluated close to 3,000 short-term, acute-care, nonfederal hospitals. 100 Top Hospitals researchers use risk-adjusted methodologies to analyze public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the CMS Hospital Compare reports.
Georgia Trend magazine named WellStar West Georgia Medical Center the “No. 1 Large Hospital” in the state for 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2013. The rankings are determined by grouping together hospitals of similar size and mission and then by comparing data from the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which provides publicly available information (hospitalcompare.hhs.gov) on more than 40 quality-related indicators, including patient experience, outcomes of care, process of care, and efficiency and value of the services rendered.
Becker’s Hospital Review, one of the nation’s most prestigious healthcare publications, named WellStar West Georgia Medical Center to its 2018, 2017 and 2016 and national list of “100 Great Community Hospitals.” WellStar was one of only two hospitals in Georgia to receive this honor in 2018 and one of three community hospitals in Georgia to receive this honor in both 2016 and 2017.
Becker’s has published a version of the list annually since 2011. This is the sixth year the list has included 100 hospitals. For the purposes of the list, Becker’s defines a “community hospital” as one with fewer than 550 beds without large teaching programs.
The Becker’s editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on rankings and awards from organizations including iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades, CareChex, the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the Leapfrog Group. Included organizations have earned recognition from one or more of these organizations.
The American Hospital Association’s Health Forum named West Georgia Medical Center to the list of the 2017 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems. The “Most Wired” designation is a result in part from WellStar West Georgia’s having an Electronic Health Record system that is integrated with patient monitoring devices and a medical information technology software program from Intelligent Medical Objects, a developer of medical terminology solutions. This collaboration provides seamless mapping of clinician-friendly diagnosis and procedure terminologies to billing codes and medical concepts. WellStar West Georgia’s Information Services department also earned the 2017 “Most Wired” designation for building electronic orders for providers, DrFirst for e-prescribing, and a patient portal accessible from outside the hospital.
Survey results also placed WellStar West Georgia in 2016 on the “Most Wired’s Most Improved” list for the advances it has made in leveraging technology that assists clinicians in providing the best possible patient care. The designation is a result of strides made in electronic connectivity and documentation, including the use of electronic health records, e-prescribing, electronic order sets and discharge routines.
